Lyme Regis is a coastal town in West Dorset, England. It sits in the middle of Lyme Bay and the border of Dorset and Devon. This is the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site.
Described as ‘The Pearl of Dorset’, it is well known for fossils which can be found on the beaches and in the cliffs on either side of the town. The harbour wall known as ‘The Cobb’, protects the picturesque harbour, which still has fishing boats operating for both pleasure and commercial outings.
A number of films have been set in Lyme Regis including ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ and ‘Ammonite’ starring Kate Winslett and Saoirse Ronan, which is released in November 2020. It depicts the life of Mary Anning, a renowned fossil collector, famous for finding the first complete Ichthyosaur amongst many other fossils over 200 years ago
As a coastal resort, Lyme Regis has lots of seaside activities such as fishing trips, sailing and paddle boarding. There is a large sandy beach with a safe swimming zone and stony beaches either side ideal for dog walking and fossil hunting.
There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops in town that are open all year round, a golf course, tennis court and skatepark plus lots of great walks.
